I am scared to go to therapy, what can I expect?

You have made the decision to seek help to manage your mental health. Yay you: that is a big step! And, now, you are feeling scared or overwhelmed about the process. It is VERY normal to feel uneasy about attending therapy. At Steadfast, YOU are in control of the pace set for your goals. You may need a bit of time to settle in, or you may have already been doing some personal work and are ready to dive in. I will follow your lead on pace, and we will not talk about parts of your story that you don’t want to or are not ready to. I offer new clients a free, 10-minute phone consultation at which time you can ask questions that you may have about the therapy process and we can discuss some of your fears or worries about the process.

How do I know if I need therapy?

Sometimes there is a stigma that only people with serious mental health diagnoses seek the help of a psychologist. However, that is quite far from the truth! In fact, the people who seek therapy are incredibly diverse and come from all walks of life and with a range of goals, whether it be to treat a mental health diagnosis, to move through a trying time, or to work on self-improvement, and just about everything in between.

I believe that most, if not all, of us can benefit from having the support of an unbiased, non-judgmental person. At Steadfast, I treat clients with serious mental health concerns like Major Depressive and Bipolar Disorders, clients who are moving through a life transition, and clients working towards a healthy, meaningful life. You can learn more about my areas of practice here.

More information about therapy is made available by the Psychologists’ Association of Alberta

What is a psychologist?

Psychologists have significant training and undergo extensive supervision and examinations. Psychologists are regulated health professionals who provide a variety of services including psychotherapy, assessment, and diagnosis.

Psychologists do not prescribe medications.

Do I need a referral to book an appointment?

A referral is not required to see a psychologist. However, on rare occasions, some insurance companies may require a physician’s referral in order for a client to be eligible for reimbursement. It is up to each client to understand the requirements of their benefit plan.

Is my information kept confidential?

All Registered Psychologists in Alberta adhere to strict confidentiality standards set by the College of Alberta Psychologists (CAP). All information said within therapy sessions is considered confidential. There are a few exceptions to this rule, which will be discussed with each client during their first session.

What can I expect from therapy?

At Steadfast, I believe that people are capable of making positive changes, whether it be to navigate through a difficult life transition, process past traumas, or incorporate changes that lead to a healthier lifestyle. The goals of your therapeutic journey are up to you. That being said, each person’s therapeutic journey will be unique. I encourage you to text, email, or call me (Barb) to book a free 10-minute phone consult at which time we can discuss if Steadfast Psychological is a good fit for you AND talk about what you can expect within therapy.

Is there a cancellation policy?

Most psychologists request that clients provide at least 24 hours notice to cancel or reschedule an appointment. If appointments are missed or cancelled without 24 hour notice, it is standard practice to charge a cancellation fee. At Steadfast, full fee for cancellation will be applied without 24-hours’ notice and in the case of no-show appointments. This fee may be lowered under certain circumstances, which will be discussed with each client during their first session.
